Five Fun and Fabulous Facts About Farts

Everyone does it. Farts. Some might choose to do so in private, others don’t really care. And most kids think farts are the funnest thing on the planet.

  1. The average number of times a person farts is 15 times a day. Some do less, some do more. 40 times is not uncommon. Neither is 5. My sister, who has an excessive amount of built up gasses in her system, once guessed way beyond 100 times a day.
  2. The reason your fart smells, is because of the combination of the gasses in your intestines. Most of them are harmless, like carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen. But the stinky part is hydrogen sulfide. Certain foods will increase the production, but luckily it is only about 1% of your farts that actually stinks.
  3. There are over 300 fart euphemisms: The Tushy Tickler, Rump Roar, One-Man Brass Band, Fowl Howl to mention a few. Do you have a special word for your frankenfarts?
  4. Did you know that you could get special underwear that helps filter the smell of your farts? Shreddies is a UK based company that specializes in flatulence filtering underwear. So for those days where you really are super stinky, the underwear would help minimize the odor.
  5. It is not uncommon to think that your own farts are not unpleasantly smelly. In fact the smell can be comforting and soothing, because it is familiar and safe to you. It may also be because you’ve grown up in a family, that were more productive in that area. Or maybe you just have a really bad sense of smell in general.

In summary, farts are a natural process of how the body works, whether it’s 5 or 50 times a day you let one rip.

Better out than in, I say.
